[IPCop-user] No Hard Disk Found

Hello

I've used IPCop for years and now I'm having my first real problem. This is
my first question to the list. Hope someone can help.

I'm trying to get IPCop v 1.4.15 installed.
Motherboard: Intel DG965RY
RAM: 512M
BIOS is at latest version according to Intel website.

I'm trying to install using CD-ROM. The CD is good cause I can install
using this CD on another machine. Also, I tried using two different IDE
CD-ROM drives with no luck. These two CD-ROM drives are good cause I can
use them to install on another system.

Basically I boot to the IPCop CD and choose the "CD-ROM" install and then is
probes the SCSI stuff and then it tells me "No CD-ROM Found". If I choose
the http install (I still boot to IPCop install CD) and choose the "http"
install I choose my LAN for green zone, assign IP address and tell the
install where on my network to find the isntall files and after that I get
"No Hard Drive Found".

I have tried two hard drives. A 80G SATA hard drive and an IDE 40G drive.
I get the same results with both.

The motherboard has no problem seeing both hard drives, but the IPCop
install does for some reason.

Please, any help is greatly appreciated. I have searched through the email
archives with little info on this.

Regards

Have you:
- Tried changing in BIOS SATA controller to emulate IDE?
- Verified Master/Slave, cable placement etc for Drivers?
- Booted to another Linux Distro to determine/verify drivers in use and
working?

A-ha!

The Intel 965 chipset has problems with any kernel older than 2.6.20 (yes, I spent a lot of time beating my head up against a wall before finding this out).

Basically, the IDE chipset is a Marvell, which is a super-cheapo new chipset, and was really an afterthought on the 965 boards, because Intel wanted to make them 100% SATA. However, since SATA DVD/CD drives are rare and expensive, they threw this on to get support for them.

In the 2.6 kernels, you can give grub the 'all-generic-ide' directive, which is slow, but works. I don't know about the 2.4 kernels (which IPCop uses), since I didn't try it.

The solution is one of the following:
1) Install from other than a CD-ROM drive (http, for instance)
2) Buy an expensive SATA CD/DVD drive
3) Install IPCop on an older PC and procure the Intel board for your Windows desktop. ;-)

Thanks Kyle.

I did try the http install but when I tried that I got the "No Hard Drive
Found" message (got that with both SATA drive and the IDE drive).

Sounds like IPCOP is not going to work on this chipset.

Luckily I have a great hardware vendor and I am just going to swap my newly
bought motherboard for a different one.

Again, Thanks Kyle!

I'm having the exact same issue with a slightly different motherboard but it
is still an Intel with the 965 chipset.

Unfortunately, it is a government job that is bid out, so using substituted
hardware is not an option.

Can IPCop be installed on top of an already working distro? If so, I could
install Debian and then add IPCop.

You could try another distro and then run IPCOP under VMWare Server.
Another option might be to add a supported SATA or IDE card until the
newer chipset is supported.

VMWare has serious performance issues on kernels later than 2.6.17 (IIRC?). (Again, much head-beating.)

I was trying to install a VMware server when I found that the 965 chipsets didn't play well with the earlier kernels, and VMware doesn't play well with later kernels (I dunno - maybe they've gotten these fixed in the past month or so). I ended up installing from a USB CDROM drive and decided I really didn't need the PATA channel until the incompatibilities between VMware and Marvell chipsets worked themselves out.

Sounds good. Can anyone tell me a supported SATA controller? I don't want
to just buy them until I find one that works.

The problem isn't the SATA controller, it's the PATA controller.

Under Logs, Log Settings. Point it to you syslog server, and you are done.
It just worked out of the box for me. Kind of neat to see all the cron jobs
running.
